Salsa fresca with bell pepper


This light and fresh salsa recipe is a staple in our family, especially during the summer months. The salsa recipe is made with tomatoes, onion, fresh basil,  garlic, chilli, lime and bell pepper.I never used to put bell pepper in salsa before my mother started doing it. The different coloured bell peppers add different flavour and different levels of sweetness. This recipe is on the mild side of the salsa spectrum,  as bell pepper is used instead of hot pepper. In contrast to most salsa recipe which calls for cilantro, this recipe is made with fresh basil. Basil taste terrific mixed with fresh vegetables and in my family we tend to have pots of fresh basil all summer long.  This salsa is delicious with grilled meat of fish or combined with warm vegetables.



3 large tomatoes

1 yellow bell pepper

1/2 green bell pepper

1/2 red onion

1/4-1/2 chilli

a squeeze of lime juice

a large handful fresh basil

1 fed garlic





  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender or food processor.
  2. Pulse until the salsa is as chunky or smooth as you like it.
  3. Taste and adjust the seasonings: Give the salsa a taste. Stir in more lime juice or salt if needed.
